Vista, Adaptec, Epson and Canon
I have been using Vista Ultimate 64 since January 2007, fairly happily I might add. Okay it had a few issues at first, but were soon rectified. The only major problems I have had with Vista are the lack of drivers. For the drivers that I want, this has not been Microsoft’s fault but rather the peripheral/component manufactures. Many of the manufacturers that I have contacted have replied saying that unless there is a demand for it, they will not release drivers for Vista and/or 64bit drivers. Unless I am mistaken, the fact I am asking should indicate there is a need, not to mention all of the forums complaining about this.
The three main problems I have had are:
- EPSON Stylus Photo 1290
- I managed to solve this one by a hack that I found on the web fairly early on. I do not remember the details.
- Adaptec 2904 PCI SCSI Card
- Okay, I am a bit slow here as this one has taken me over a year to solve. I had to move the device to another computer running XP to be able to use it.
- The simple solution here is to buy a new card that is compatible with Vista. But why should a spend another sum of money to buy a piece of hardware to replace a perfectly good and working device that the manufacturer will not support.
- I found a very simple solution for this (see original post here). Essentially you use device manager to change the driver to "Adaptec AIC-7870 PCI SCSI
- Controller (Emulated)" and it detects the card and runs fine.
- Canon CanoScan FS2710 Film Scanner
- Okay, I am a bit slow here as this one has taken me over a year to solve. I had to move the device, along with the card discussed above, to another computer running XP to be able to use it.
- The Canon software doesn't work and I have resorted to using VueScan for the time being.
Hope this helps some of you.
