Education
University of Bath (PhD :: 1999 - 2003)
I started by mentioning to my tutor (Dr Adrian Evans who became my supervisor for the PhD), when I was doing my degree, that I was interested in doing a PhD. He actually was just sorting out some funding, and so I was lucky enough to be able to get my application in before anyone else even knew about it, and also managed to get an informal interview with Prof. Arthur Mason OBE who sponsored me. Arthur initially worked for NDS, who were the suppliers of the money. Shortly after starting, the company, or parts of it got took over by Tandberg Television, who the took over my funding until 2002 when all funding stopped. The initial brief for the project was to develop pre-processing systems to increase the performance of a digital video compression system.
University of Bath (MEng :: 1995 - 1999)
To be honest I'm not totally sure why I decided to go to uni, but I am glad I did and that I chose the University of Bath . The first year is great fun, living on campus with plenty of night life, pubs and clubs about the place. However, much of the first year was the same as the last year at college, so little work was done. This seemed to be a good idea at the time but when you go into the second year, you suddenly realise that things would be a lot easier had you worked during the first year. Many people think that uni is easy, well in some ways parts of it are but for the whole, and especially in engineering it is hard. So why did I do it? As I said, I'm not totally sure. It may have had something to do with teachers at Turnpike telling me I wouldnt go anywhere, or the fact that everone else was going and your expected to follow. Anyway, despite the hardwork, it gets you to think and problem solve in ways you probably would never think of, you meet new people and a new way of life, you develop new skills and of coure, you get a Degree.
Newbury College (BTEC ND :: 1993 - 1995)
I went to Newbury College to take a BTEC National Diploma in Engineering, which I achieved in 1995. We managed to become the first class in Engineering to take part in an exchange program with a German college in 1994 and 1995. Our tutor was Martin Farr, who as far as I am concerned was excellent. He made sure we got the work done, gave help with any problems and supported us through the 2 years.
